How
Active
Are You?
Healthy living includes eating right, protecting yourself from the dangers of tobacco and adopting a physically active lifestyle. Being physically active helps you fight against such things as:
Heart disease
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Weight gain
Arthritis
And offers many health benefits, like:
Reduced stress
Prevention of bone loss
Strong muscles
Increased metabolism
Plus many, many more!
It may seem like you don't have any time to work physical activity into your daily routine, but it can be very easy Remember, adults should get at least 3o minutes of moderate activity 5 or more days per week and children and adolescents should participate in at lest 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on 5 or more days each week.
Tips to Increase Physical Activity:
Get up and move after sitting for long periods of time (at least once each hour).
Try to take 10,000 steps every day (you can measure this by wearing a pedometer on your belt or waistband).
Park further away at the store.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator.
Take your pet for a walk.
Work 10-minute walks in throughout your day (just 3 and you have met your 30 minute goal).
Walk, bike, or rollerblade instead of driving your car (if at all possible).
No matter what you like to do for physical activity, make a point of working it into your daily schedule. The benefits of exercising are endless and best of all it is FREE!
